Clairemont Woman Runs for San Diego County Assessor/Recorder/Clerk.

Susan Guinn
Susan Guinn, well known consumer attorney, community leader, and 21- year resident of Clairemont, is running for San Diego County Assessor/Recorder/Clerk.

Guinn, 48, who lives in the Bay Park area of Clairemont with her spouse and two sons, has never sought elected office before.

“I am not a politician,” said Guinn. “I am a businesswoman, an advocate, and a mom. I’m running for this office because I saw the current Assessor/Clerk abusing his power and wasting taxpayer money, and that’s not fair to the people of San Diego County.

The Assessor/Recorder/Clerk office handles all property valuations in the county. These valuations determine how much in property taxes business owners and homeowners pay each year. The office is also responsible for record keeping and licensing throughout the county, including business licenses, marriage licenses, and birth certificates.

The incumbent, Ernest Dronenburg Jr., has been in office since 2011. He made headlines in 2013 when he refused to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples after a Supreme Court decision overturned Proposition 8.

Guinn said that marriage equality is not what made her decide to run for this office.

“I’m interested in what this office can do for the people of San Diego County with the right person in it,” said Guinn. “The goal of the office should be to assist families and businesses with only paying their fair share in taxes. The back-log of assessment appeals must be eliminated, to put money back in the pockets of taxpayers as soon as possible. Unfair taxes must stop."

Guinn serves as the chair of the Environmental and Sustainability Committee for the San Diego Unified School District, and also sits on the Boards of Equality California and the St. Paul’s Foundation. She is the co-founder, along with her son Max, of KidsEcoClub, which is provides free services, including field trips to Clairemont High, Longfellow Elementary, Montgomery Middle School and dozens of other SDUSD schools.
